Abstract

Field mapping has been conducted in the Padangguci Ulu region and the surrounding area in order to obtain surface geological data. The ground observation focused on identification and measurement of structural elements on outcrops. Results of the mapping were compiled with analysis of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to interpret the structural configuration within the studied region. This study reveals that there appeared two extensional faults trending NE-SW, the Talang Jawi and Air Kering faults. The faulting is interpreted to occur due principally to a tensional regime responsible for the WNW-directed rifting in the Paleogene of Paleocene-Eocene time. The present study has also encountered an anticlinal structure, named the Air Sembada anticline. The episode of folding might commence at post-rifting following the inversion of the basin due principally to the Bukit Barisan Orogeny in the Late Neogene or Plio-Pleistocene time.
