Abstract

Coal characteristics such as calorie value, proximate, ultimate, maceral content and minerals have a significant influence on the process of converting low rank coal to liquid fuel. This review advocates for reviewing the characteristics of coal from Central Sulawesi which consists of districts / cities such as Donggala, Sigi, Morowali, Buol and Banggai Islands to the process of converting to liquid fuels through the pirolysis method. The research methodology, namely conducting a review of the literature that is relevant to the characteristics of coal from Central Sulawesi and its influence on the conversion process into liquid fuels. Based on the characteristics consisting of caloric value, proximate, ultimate, maceral content and minerals from coal from
Banggai Islands Regency, it shows characteristics as the best coal from Central Sulawesi to be used as liquid fuel through the pyrolysis method. With, the characteristics of coal, namely: (1) calorific value depends on the interval of 5,600-5,700 kcal / kg; (2) proximate, namely: moisture 4.77%; volatile matter 42.67%; fixed carbon 38.06%; ash content 12.45%; and total sulfur of 2.05%;
(3) ultimate, namely: carbon 65.33%; hydrogen 4.55%; nitrogen 1.64%; sulfur 2.54%; and oxygen 25.94%; (5) the composition of maceral and minerals, namely vitrinite, 86.85%; inertinit 0.45%; liptinit 1.45%; clay 7.90%; Fe Oxide 2.10%; and 1.25% pyrite.
